Helpful fondant trick
Teaching myself how to decorate cakes is fun, but it can also be very frustrating. I was having so much trouble getting my fondant to go on smooth, and without tearing. I was using the Wilton fondant you can by at the store, but I ran across something that helped me out a lot, and saved me some money.
Make your own buttercream fondant, and mix about 1/4 of a block of the Wilton fondant in with it to give it some stiffness. The buttercream fondant is cheaper to make, and it has more elasticity to it. The buttercream fondant is also easier to repair tears, and abnormalities on your cake. A big block of Wilton fondant will run you roughly $18-$20, but the buttercream fondant is a lot cheaper. Here is the recipe.
BUTTERCREAM FONDANT
Ingredients
· 1 cup light corn syrup
· 1 cup shortening
· 1/2 teaspoon salt
· 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
· 2 pounds confectioners' sugar
Directions
1. In a large bowl, stir together the shortening and corn syrup. Mix in the salt and vanilla flavoring, then gradually mix in the confectioners' sugar until it is a stiff dough. If you are using a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment. Otherwise, knead by hand. If the dough is sticky, knead in more confectioners' sugar until it is smooth. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
2. To use, roll out on a clean surface that has been dusted with confectioners' sugar.
